Everything you want to know about switching to SaltyPay. Still stuck? Marc's happy to chat.
What exactly is SaltyPay?
SaltyPay is a payment processing consultancy based on Salt Spring Island. We act as your free advisor and service provider, placing your business with major Canadian processors and gateways. Those partners pay us to bring them good business, so our help costs you nothing.
The difference: 50% of what we earn goes back to the Salt Spring community, so your payment processing actively supports the island's events and non-profits.
How is SaltyPay different from my bank?
Banks offer processing, but it's rarely their focus, so you're often on outdated pricing with thin support. SaltyPay specializes in payments: we audit your current setup, find savings, and provide hands-on local support.
And your fees fund the community instead of shareholder dividends. We're invested in Salt Spring's success, not just our own bottom line.
Will switching cause any downtime?
No. We handle the transition for you. In most cases your new terminal is set up and tested before the old one is deactivated, so you see zero disruption to your business.
What does "cost-plus" pricing mean?
It's the most transparent pricing model in processing. Your hard costs (the interchange and assessment fees set by Visa and Mastercard) pass through at cost. We add one small, fixed markup on your volume, so you see exactly what you pay and why.
Compare that to bundled or tiered pricing, where processors hide their margins and you're never quite sure what you're paying for. More on our Pricing page.
What is surcharging, and is it right for my business?
Surcharging lets you add up to 2.4% to credit card transactions to offset processing costs. It applies to credit cards only, never debit, and it's fully compliant in Canada.
Many businesses use it to neutralize their processing costs entirely. Cafe Flora opened with surcharging on and has had zero complaints. Done transparently, customers appreciate seeing the real cost of credit card convenience.
Do I need to change my accounting software?
Not at all. Clover integrates with QuickBooks, and BenjiPays syncs directly with QuickBooks Online and Xero. Your existing workflows stay the same: we fit into your systems, not the other way around.
I'm an accountant or bookkeeper. Can SaltyPay help my clients?
Absolutely. BenjiPays is especially powerful for bookkeepers managing several clients, with consolidated reporting, simpler reconciliation, and less administrative overhead across your whole client base.
Since many Salt Spring businesses share accounting staff, one bookkeeper recommending SaltyPay can streamline payments for everyone they work with.
