About SaltyPay
SaltyPay came to life in Jan, 2021, after months of pondering how to best make a positive impact on Salt Spring Island’s business and wider community, having moved here from Vancouver in 2019.
Marc Weber is the founder of SaltyPay and runs the day-to-day. His partner, Solana Rompre — who grew up in beautiful Burgoyne Bay — manages SaltyPay’s community initiatives. And sons Zevi and Ezzy (man, we need a new picture!) are SaltyPay’s joint Chief Cuteness Officers, also in charge of snacks.
Inspired by companies like TOMS and Ben & Jerry's — and by the collective spirit of Salt Spring — Marc wanted to rethink (on a much smaller scale) how a payments company could operate and act in a small community. In the end, the answer was simple: Put half of SaltyPay’s profits back into the community. You could say we want to turn people’s point of sale into a point of giving.
By 2030, we aim to have an ongoing donation stream of $10,000 annually that can support multiple island events and initiatives in a sustainable way. We want to be a model for how other companies in our industry can operate in a small community.
We are thrilled to have several merchants on board already and look forward to engaging with more business owners and non-profits in the coming years.
About Marc
Founder Marc Weber has worked in sales and business development in the payment processing industry since 2017, following a long career in communications and journalism. He is vice president of Vancouver-based Baseline Payments, who support 2,000+ merchants across Canada and into the U.S., processing over $2B in annual transactions. SaltyPay is his passion project here on island.
Born in Cape Town and raised in England and Vancouver, Marc moved to Salt Spring with partner Solana in May, 2019. Son Zev followed five months later and Ezra joined the party in 2022. When he’s not working or dadding, Marc can be found at the local tennis courts, grumbling about Tottenham’s form over a nice coffee, or jumping in a lake.
About Solana
Born on Lasqueti Island and raised on Salt Spring, Solana’s passion for art took her to SFU, where she studied art and culture, and then into the working world as an exhibition manager for various organizations. She returned to Salt Spring to manage Artcraft in 2019, before shifting into life as a full-time supermom. She looks forward to working with SaltyPay’s community partners to create something that is sustainable and meaningful.
