About SaltyPay
SaltyPay came to life in Jan, 2021, after many months of pondering how to best make a positive impact on Salt Spring Island businesses and the wider community.
Marc Weber is the founder of SaltyPay and runs the day-to-day; partner Solana Rompre will lead SaltyPay’s community initiatives; and son Zevi is Chief Cuteness Officer, also in charge of snacks.
Inspired by companies like TOMS and Ben & Jerry's — and by the collective spirit of Salt Spring — Marc wanted to radically rethink how a merchant services company could operate and act in a small community. In the end, the answer was simple: Give half of all revenue back to local non-profits. Effectively, we want to turn people’s point of sale into a point of giving that brings both the customer and merchant into a giving partnership with SaltyPay in order to benefit the wider community.
Our goals are ambitious. By 2025, we aim to have an ongoing donation stream of $10,000 annually that can support multiple projects in a sustainable way. We want to be a model for how other companies in our industry can operate in small community.
For now, though, we will focus firmly on our humble beginnings here on the island. We are thrilled to have several merchants on board already and look forward to engaging with more business owners and non-profits in the coming months.
About Marc
Founder Marc Weber has worked in sales and business development in the payment processing industry since 2017, following a long career in communications and journalism. He is vice president of Vancouver-based Baseline Payments, who support 1,700 merchants across Canada and into the U.S. processing a combined $2B in annual transactions. SaltyPay is his passion project.
Born in Cape Town and raised in England and Vancouver, Marc moved to Salt Spring with partner Solana in May, 2019. Son Zev followed five months later and they look forward to raising a family together here. When he’s not working or dadding, Marc can be found at the local tennis courts, grumbling about Tottenham’s form over a nice coffee, or jumping in a lake.
About Solana
Born and raised on Salt Spring — in beautiful Burgoyne Bay — Solana’s passion for art took her to SFU, where she studied art and culture, and then into the working world as an exhibition manager for various organizations. She returned to Salt Spring to manage Artcraft in 2019, before transitioning to life as a full-time supermom. She looks forward to working with SaltyPay’s community partners to create something that is sustainable and meaningful.
